A mother who mistakenly identified a dead body as her son was shocked to find out he is alive and well - just hours after she returned from his cremation.
Gina Partington, 58, was called to confirm the identity of a body who a care worker had identified as her homeless son Thomas Dennison, 39, earlier this month.
After seeing the corpse in the chapel of rest at Manchester Royal Infirmary she confirmed it was her son. He suffers from mental health problems and had gone missing days earlier.
She spent nearly an hour with the body, holding the man's hand and kissing his head.
Once police established that the death was not suspicious they released the body to the family, and he was cremated this Tuesday.
But just 24 hours later Mrs Partington, from Urmston, Manchester, was shocked to receive a phone call from police telling her that Thomas had been found alive. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "These set of circumstances are clearly distressing and urgent inquiries are ongoing to establish how this happened."
