Speeding teacher escapes driving ban

A teacher caught speeding for the fourth time escaped a driving ban after he told magistrates he was worried about his pupils teasing him if he had to catch the same school bus.

David Eugene Chiodi, Wey Valley School's head of ICT, also said not being able to drive would affect his students because he wouldn't be able to discuss best practice techniques at other schools.

Chiodi, 33, of The Esplanade, Weymouth, argued for exceptional hardship after a speed camera recorded him driving at 36mph on Dorchester Road at 7.53am on November 10, 2006.

Weymouth magistrates heard Chiodi, who pleaded guilty to the offence, already had three convictions for speeding from April 2004, November 2005 and May 2006. His driving licence had an existing nine penalty points, the court was told.

A Manchester firm of solicitors acting for Chiodi said: "He would have to travel to school on the same bus as the children who he teaches. He'd find it embarrassing and the children would be asking him why he's taking the bus to work."

Magistrates added three penalty points to Chiodi's licence and decided not to disqualify him. He was fined £300 and ordered to pay court costs of £100.
