A dog floating on a piece of ice in Nebraska’s Platte River was rescued on Wednesday afternoon. We've heard many stories of situations when man's best friend comes to the rescue. The tables were turned along the Platte River near the Sarpy-Cass county line south of Omaha.
The dog was first noticed in the river around 10 a.m. by Shirley Smith, who owns a business near the river. She and her husband could not rescue the black Lab, trapped on an ice flow on the river, which isn't quite frozen over. How he got there is a mystery.
“We went over there to see if we could grab him, but he was too far out,” said Shirley. “He had to be there awhile 'cause he's got a lot of frost on his stomach and he looks real cold. He’s an old dog, he’s not a young dog."
Max was in trouble with the river running on both sides and he stuck in the middle. Shirley made another attempt, but the current was too strong and the water too deep.
Help arrived with the Nebraska Humane Society, Cass County Sheriff and more. Max had enough, finally making a move. The current was strong, but his rescuers were determined.
Max got a Humane Society physical and will be reunited with his owner.
