Mystery of 'rock from the sky"

A woman has described how a mysterious rock fell from the sky on to a Derby street and knocked a passing goose to the ground.

The bird crash-landed on a parked car, causing £2,000 of damage, before it was eaten by a fox.

These were the bizarre events described by Fiona Mannion, whose Mini needed a new roof following the incident.

Mrs Mannion, of Kedleston Road, said: "There were remnants of it on the road where it bounced for about 50 metres but there were no potholes. The car will be covered by the insurance but it was fun trying to explain it to them. The rock weighed about 4kg."

Dave Selfe, secretary of Derby and District Astronomical Society, ruled out the possibility that it was a meteorite. He said: "Four kilograms is quite a size, so if that was coming through space it would form a crater of goodness knows what size. It doesn't look like a meteorite either because they are smooth and metallic."

Dr Andrew Johnson, a geologist at the University of Derby, said the rock was probably limestone from the Peak District and he did not believe it had fallen from out of the sky. "I haven't got a clue where it came from, unless somebody threw it into the air," he said.
