A man has admitted breaching an order banning him from contacting his ex-partner after police found him in her dog kennel. James McEvoy was told to keep away from his former partner of 14 years after a county court heard he had harassed her after their break-up.
But McEvoy, 38, from Renfrew Road, Sunderland, claimed he was dyslexic and could not understand the order, which was made in his absence.
Sunderland Magistrates heard that two days after the order was made, the former partner called police to say McEvoy was on her property. He was arrested on Friday and detained over the weekend.
Speaking in his defence, Laura Turner said her client had been out drinking and telephoned his ex to see if he could stay at her house. She refused, so he went to a friend's house which was next to his former partner's home.
But his friend was out, so he decided to go in to the dog kennel.
The case was adjourned until March 25 for reports. McEvoy was granted unconditional bail.
