Hamster killer is spared jail

A thug who took part in the killing of a hamster fired to its death after being taped to a firework has been spared jail.

Footage of the horrific incident was filmed on mobile phone cameras and lead to Steven Gordon being arrested. The 20-year-old was identified after police picked him out due to his "mouse like features".

The 90-second clip of the shocking incident was repeatedly played during the two-day trial. Gordon and his gang were heard loudly laughing and joking as the squirming hamster was taped to a massive rocket. The fuse was lit as one of the gang shouted: "See you later".

The firework and hamster then shot into the sky and, as it exploded, Gordon and his friends howled with laughter.

Gordon, of Killearn Street, Possilpark, was arrested after one officer told the court the response in helping catch the culprits was "better than a recent murder inquiry". He was convicted of animal cruelty and culpable and reckless conduct following a trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court last month.

He returned to court yesterday but Sheriff Gillian Bryson said she was "not considering custody". Instead she ordered him to 220 hours of community service.
