Kitchen explodes after grandchild put aerosol cans in oven

A 54-year-old grandmother was hospitalized after the children she was babysitting put aerosol spray cans into an oven, causing the appliance to explode and burn her.

The explosion happened in an apartment at Pompano Beach, Florida, city spokeswoman Sandra King said. The woman was babysitting five children, ages 1 to 4. Three of them were her grandchildren. One of the children put two aerosol spray cans into the oven, King said.

The oven was turned on and the cans exploded, blowing off the oven's door, and sending flames across the woman's legs, arms and chest, King said. The fire then spread to other parts of the kitchen.

Neighbours in the complex heard two explosions from the second-floor apartment and called 911.

Paramedics arrived and rushed the woman to North Broward Medical Center, then to Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn center for further treatment. Her injuries were not life-threatening.

Investigators have not yet determined which child put the cans into the oven or who turned the oven on.
