Paralympian's pegleg stolen at Australia beach

A former Australian Paralympic swimmer has appealed for the public's help after thieves stole his artificial leg during a family camping trip on the Sunshine Coast.

Brendan Burkett, a multiple Paralympic medallist, was holidaying with his family at the Noosa River Caravan Park, when thieves made off with his spare pegleg, worth thousands of dollars.

"Two o'clock this morning we heard a fair bit of rattling in the boat, and these two blokes got in there,'' he said. "We had fishing gear and surf boards in there and they took the pegleg, my waterproof leg.

"It would be frustrating if they took a fishing rod, but you can always get another one of those.'' Mr Burkett said the leg was the only thing stolen and would take months to replace. "The worst thing is that it takes three to four months to make a new one."

He said he suspected the theft was opportunistic.

"You'd guess at two in the morning they'd had a bit (to drink),'' he said.
