Australian man jailed for torturing mother

A drug-addled and drunk man who tortured and tried to hang his 74-year-old mother when she wouldn't give him money has been jailed for five years.

Tom Henrik Paavilainen became so angry with his mother that he tied a rope around her neck and ordered her to get onto a table so he could hang her.

He also punched, her knocking her out, before he tied her up with tape and left her on a bed.

Judge Phil Nase said morally there was "no sentence long enough" for Paavilainen but he was constrained in his sentencing options by previous cases and precedents.

He said Paavilainen had inflicted a high level of emotional cruelty and physical violence on his frail mother.

Judge Nase sentenced Paavilainen to five years jail with a recommendation he be eligible for parole after serving two years.
