Dog invited to vote in elections

Anyone who thinks that politics in this country has gone to the dogs may well be right. Just ask Bobby, the Yorkshire terrier who has received a polling card in his name to vote in the forthcoming elections.

The card reads 'Bobby Huckvale' and advises the three-year-old dog where to go to cast his ballot in the local elections on May 1.

His owner, Gavin Huckvale, said he intended to take his pet to the polling station to see if he was allowed to take part.

'I've no idea what's gone on, but it all seems a bit daft to be honest if you ask me,' added the 29-year-old from Swindon. 'We have two other dogs as well but neither have received a polling card.'

Swindon Council said the dog was sent the card because he his details were on the electoral register.

They added: 'If he'd been named Gnasher or Spot instead of Bobby we might have noticed. Either way, he is ineligible because he's not 18.'
