A drunk man picked on the wrong person when he attacked a shopper, who turned out to be a boxing coach, with a sharpened key, a court has heard.
Christopher Walker, 21, from Dundee, slashed Alexander McKelvie then told him to "Gie us your best shot."
The return blow from Mr McKelvie smashed Walker's jaw and put him in hospital for two days.
Walker was sentenced to three years in jail for assault. He had originally been accused of attempted murder.
Mr McKelvie, 23, has been left with a scar from the attack. Doctors said the consequences could have been very severe because the slash was close to vital blood vessels.
Lord Brailsford told Walker he had been very foolish about who he picked on and added: "The gentleman you assaulted appears to have been more than able to respond to your assault on him."
