Yobs laughed as they slashed a dog's throat in front of its owner.
Pippa, an eight-year-old cross-breed, was playing in the garden of owner Jenny Wilson in Ribston Way, Chesterton, Cambridge, when the youths attacked her.
They got into the garden through a hole in the fence and grabbed the dog.
Jenny, a 48-year-old carer, rushed outside when she heard Pippa yelp. She looked on in horror as they cut Pippa's throat - they laughed as they ran away. Pippa needed 56 stitches.
Through tears, a distraught Jenny said: "This has been very difficult. Pippa is my pride and joy. She is a harmless and a very lovely dog so there was no reason for what happened. Pippa is now too scared to go out into the garden."
Police said they were appalled by the attack and made an urgent appeal for witnesses or information leading to the capture of the attackers, believed to be aged 18 to 20.
