Litter rejected as 'wrong type of waste'

Volunteers who collected 40 bags of litter were banned from leaving it at a council tip – because it was the wrong of rubbish.

The puzzled band of volunteers were warned a fine of up to £20,000 could be imposed if the rubbish was left in a skip at the Foxhall waste site near Ipswich.

And officials warned them they could be arrested for fly-tipping if they dumped it back by the roadside.

In the end team leader Robin Pivett had to take the bags home and wait for them to be collected.

Thirty people spent all Sunday collecting litter from the streets in Woodbridge during a Keep Suffolk Tidy fortnight.

Mark Deer, the council's waste services manager, said: “Unfortunately the site can not accept that type of waste. Waste is categorised - we cannot take in everything and if we are caught accepting waste not permitted under our licence we could be prosecuted.”
