The FBI is looking for an unusual bank robber who held up a Wachovia Bank branch at the Stanford Shopping Center on Thursday in Palo Alto.
Authorities described the suspect as a bearded man in his 60s who was in an electric wheelchair.
Investigators said he rolled into the bank around 4:30 p.m., pointed a gun at a teller and demanded money. They said he took the cash and drove out of the bank in the wheelchair.
They believe he then took off in a white Ford van with red lettering on the side that had a lift for the wheelchair.
Detectives said the van could have been part of a drop off and pick up service and that they’re not sure if the driver was even aware of the bank robbery.
Officials said they also don’t know if the man was truly disabled or if the wheelchair was just a prop. But they said the man’s legs were wrapped in bandages and that his right leg was sticking straight out.
