Ronaldo, the Brazilian footballer, has been questioned by police over allegations that he became involved in an altercation with three transvestite prostitutes he had taken back to a motel.
The AC Milan striker left a nightclub in Rio de Janeiro’s affluent Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood early on Monday with the three prostitutes only to discover they were all men, said Brazilian police. The 31-year-old allegedly offered each of them £300 not to tell the media about the incident but only two of them accepted the offer.
According to the footballer, the third allegedly demanded £15,000 for keeping quiet, at which an angry confrontation ensued. Carlo Augusto Nogueira, a local police inspector, said he believed Ronaldo because the transvestite left the police station before being fully questioned.
He said: “I have to check both sides of the story, the transvestites’ version and Ronaldo’s.
“Ronaldo said he is not good in the head and that he is going through psychological problems because of his recent surgery .”
Mr Nogeuira said the footballer had admitted to ordering prostitutes – which is not illegal in Brazil – but insisted that he believed they were women. “He admitted to everything, he wanted to have fun. But he committed no crime at all. It was immoral at best,” the inspector said.
