Australian police step up 'urine trade' patrols

Police have stepped up patrols near a drug treatment facility where it is claimed urine is being traded in Newcastle, in the New South Wales Hunter region.

A hotel licensee says people are being offered cash for urine to help addicts pass regular screening tests.

Hunter New England Health is investigating but police say it is not illegal to sell urine.

Newcastle Lord Mayor John Tate yesterday implored police to act on the claims.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Fox says there will be a greater police presence in the area. "There has been visible police presence in that area, certainly at least over the last few weeks and possibly even longer," he said.

"We have been patrolling that area for persons congregating and police have been moving people on when the opportunity necessitates that. We intend to continue that."
