Fine after 'flower power' crime

A man who waved a plastic flower in a police officer's face has been fined £500 at Londonderry Magistrates Court.

The court heard that Neil Brian Devine, 20, from Beechwood Street in the city, waved the flower at police in an "aggressive manner" in November 2006.

They told him to go home, but he then shouted sectarian abuse at them.

Devine was fined £150 for disorderly behaviour, and an additional £350 for failing to turn up for the case on several previous occasions.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said it was far from the worst weapon the police have had to face in the centre of Derry.

Resident magistrate Barney McElholm told Devine it had been "a rather expensive display of flower power".
