A three-year-old caused a full-scale police search when he wandered off from his mother in a busy market and sneaked on to a bus yesterday.
Lee Loram vanished in Blackburn, Lancashire. In the subsequent search when he was reported missing, a police helicopter was scrambled, mounted officers and foot patrols were drafted in, and CCTV images were scoured for hours with no sign of the boy.
The drama came to an end when Lee reappeared of his own accord. It emerged he had hopped aboard a bus unnoticed and travelled to Bolton on his own, and then come back again.
The child sat quietly as the bus winded its way from Blackburn through Darwen, Egerton and Astley Bridge to its destination 30 miles away. He remained on the bus for the one hour return journey and got off back at the bus station in Bolton - three-and-a-half hours after he had been reported missing. He was quickly spotted by police officers who returned him to his family safe and well, ending fears that he had been abducted.
A police spokesman said: "It appears he got on a bus at Blackburn town centre. He stayed on for the duration of the journey to Bolton. He then came back to Blackburn and, as he got off the bus, he was immediately spotted by officers and reunited with his family and is safe and well."
The spokesman added the family did not wish to comment about the matter. The bus operator's parent company, Transdev, was unavailable for comment.
