Dog trapped in owl-shaped pot

Hector the dog was left howling in frustration after he took an unfortunate turn during a mouse hunt.

The Norfolk terrier got his head wedged in an owl-shaped earthenware pot after chasing the creature into it. Owner Molly Mapes couldn't pull off the heavy ornament and had to call firefighters to rescue her pet.

They used hydraulic equipment – normally used to cut casualties from cars – to free her five-year-old pet, who was not hurt in his escapade.

The terrier could breathe because the ornament had holes in it and the firefighters used a screwdriver to enlarge them.

'Hector made some strange noises while we were cutting the pot off but as soon as he was free he seemed really happy and not in any distress at all,' added Mrs Mapes, of Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex.

Stephen Glover, the firefighter in charge, said: 'It is one of the strangest sights I have ever seen – a little dog with a huge owl-shaped pot stuck over his head.'
