Exploding pants may help detectives trace the movements of a man who robbed a Pompano Beach bank early on Monday morning.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said a surveillance camera captured the man walking into a Washington Mutual bank location at 101 South Pompano Parkway around 9:30 a.m. Witnesses told sheriff's deputies the man walked up teller, implied he had a weapon and demanded money. The teller handed over an unspecified amount of cash, with a dye pack hidden inside, and the man left.
A short time later, the man was inside the Cash America Pawn shop on Sunrise Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale, when the dye pack exploded in his pants. A store clerk said he saw the man toss the exploded pack away, along with some of the stained bills, as he ran out of the store.
The dye is designed to irritate the skin of the targeted suspect, and is difficult to remove its stains from the skin.
