Snake found in toilet in Gloucester

A Gloucester family had the fright of their lives after discovering a 4ft long snake coming out of the toilet. When 26-year-old Kay Robins first spotted the snake she thought her partner Brian Williams was playing a practical joke.

But soon the truth dawned and Kay was frozen to the spot in terror, fearing for the safety of her three-month-old baby Summer. Kay, from Bristol Road, said: “I spotted the snake when I went to use the toilet. I saw the tail poking out from the rim of the loo and thought Brian was playing a trick on me until I saw it moving.

“My heart was in my mouth. I couldn't scream because I was so scared. We phoned the RSPCA but it seemed to have vanished. Then we flushed the toilet and it appeared again and started coming out.” Soon the black and yellow snake had slid its way onto the top of the toilet and then the bathroom floor.”

Kay and Brian tried to shoo it into a bin until someone from the RSPCA could arrive. But the snake had other plans and in desperation Kay had to shut herself in the bathroom with the reptile – later identified as a Californian King Snake, which is a popular pet among snake owners.

“I couldn't believe it”, she said. “What on earth was a snake from California doing in my bathroom? Needless to say I couldn't use the toilet for a while after that!”

An RSPCA spokesman said: “The snake was identified as a Californian King Snake, which is a popular pet among snake owners. “The animal probably escaped from not far away and found its way into the house. Like most snakes it prefers to stay away from people and hide in dark spaces, so the rim of a downstairs toilet would have been an ideal hiding place.”
