Polish workers urged to drink tea and talk about the weather

A new welcome pack for Polish migrant workers arriving in Devon has been produced to help them make the most of their time in the county.

As well as information about housing and employment it also offers tips about the British way of life.

It advises readers that talking about the weather is generally a good way to start a conversation.

It also cautions that the best way to answer the question "How are you?", is not to respond with health details.

Other tips include advice that Polish people may notice the English tend to say "please", "sorry" and "thank you" a lot. "Use them where you can, and just to be on the safe side, smile!" the guide urges.

Advice is also offered about the ritual of tea-drinking which it says provides "an opportunity to overcome shyness and make everyone feel more comfortable." It goes on to say: "You may be asked whether you want your drink weak or strong, white (with milk) or black (without)".
