Scissors, paper ... lifesaver

A brother and sister used the game of paper, scissors, stone to decide who would donate a kidney and dramatically improve another brother's life.

Matthew and Naomi Gardner were asked by a doctor which one would be prepared to go under the knife after Nathan, 30, collapsed from chronic renal failure. He was faced with the prospect of being connected to a dialysis machine unless a suitable donor could be found.

As they sat in Accident and Emergency with their brother in intensive care the duo could only think of one way of deciding. Without hesitation they both took part in a best of five series of the playground game, the loser becoming the donor.

Players make the shape of paper, scissors or stone with their hands at the count of three. Paper wraps stone but gets cut by scissors, whereas stone blunts scissors. Matthew, 34, from Middleton emerged as the winner - leaving Naomi, 25, facing an operation.

He explained: "I don't know why she bothered - because I cheat and always win. I was 2-1 up so she said best of five. In the next game I saw her pull out scissors so I did a stone to blunt them and won."

But his joy was short lived. He said: "I was sitting there looking smug when another doctor came in and asked us what we were doing. "We told him and he said that I would have to donate because they would only use a girl of Naomi's age as a last resort as the surgery can affect future pregnancies."
