Syrian lorry driver takes a 1,600 mile detour to Gibraltar via Skegness thanks to sat nav

A trucker driving from Turkey to Gibraltar on sat-nav ended up 1,600 miles adrift – at Skegness.

Bird watchers at Gibraltar Point nature reserve looked on in amazement as his 32-ton lorry struggled along a narrow track.

Syrian driver Necdet Bakimci stopped with only the North Sea at Lincolnshire in front of him.

He explained in broken English how he was looking for Coral Road on Gibraltar in southern Spain.

Twitcher Steven Humphreys, 57, of Burgh le Marsh, Lincs, said: “He showed me his delivery docket. I had my laptop and found the place on Gibraltar. Amazingly, the guy didn’t seem too upset.”

The confusion came about because the Rock of Gibraltar is considered part of the UK – and sat-nav systems would list it as such.
