Canadian police arrest 9-year-old boy

Ottawa police are looking into a bizarre incident last weekend when a 9-year-old boy apparently held up a west end restaurant with a toy gun.

Cops responded to a restaurant near Coben Rd. and Iris St. around 2:10 p.m. on Saturday. Officers arrested the young boy and returned him to his parents.

Ottawa police spokesman Const. Alain Boucher said he couldn't get into details about the investigation, but he confirmed that detectives continue to investigate the incident. "We have no other information available at this time and it may be highly probable that no other information will be released due to the age of the involved individual," Boucher said.

It's unknown if the boy was actually trying to rob the restaurant or playing, but the incident was serious enough for officers to attend.

A manager at the takeout restaurant declined to talk about what happened yesterday, chalking the incident up to "just kids." He noted that nothing was taken from the restaurant and no one was hurt.

Charges wouldn't apply to the boy because the Youth Criminal Justice Act doesn't kick in until 12 years of age.
