Cockatoo stuck after high-speed collision

A gang-gang cockatoo has been hailed as the "luckiest bird alive" after it collided and got stuck on a car travelling at 80km/h and escaped serious injury.

The bird slammed into the front of Caroline Brown's sedan at Berwick, in Melbourne’s south-east. Ms Brown was amazed to find the red-crested gang-gang trapped but still alive near the air intake, its wings and head poking out.

Animal recue expert Nigel Williamson said he couldn’t believe what he saw when he arrived shortly later.

"Normally we would find a dead bird," Mr Williamson said. "I thought, 'what do I do to get it out?’ I got both wings back in the right position. Then it showed me its legs were working and it managed to crawl out."

Mr Williamson took the gang-gang to a nearby animal emergency centre, where it was cleared of any broken bones.

"There was a bit of blood on his head but he can still fly," he said. "He'll be a bit bruised for a while." Mr Williamson will take care of the gang-gang until it is well enough to return to the wild. "It's amazing. He is the luckiest bird alive."
