Pub bans woman for being black

A British tourist was refused service in two pubs in Hungary because she was black. Laure Mague, 34, went to a bar to watch football with friends but was furious when told she was barred. She said yesterday: "I couldn't believe it. I've never had anything like that in my life. She was so blunt, straight to my face. I was completely shocked.

"They might as well have put a sign on the door 'No Blacks Allowed'."

Laure, from Balham, South London, who was on holiday in Budapest, said: "I went up to the bar and the waitress asked if I spoke English or Hungarian. I said English.

"And then she said: 'I can't serve you because black people had a fight in here a few days ago. My boss has told me not to serve black customers'. I was so stunned I just walked out. But it hit me later and I got so angry.

"It's not like we're in 60s America. This is 21st century Europe. It is disgusting." Laure and her friends then went to another bar the next night but again a barmaid refused to serve her after "a group of black people had been rowdy, scaring off white customers".

Racial discrimination is outlawed in the EU, which Hungary joined in 2004. The European Network Against Racism said: "Sadly, it happens surprisingly often but it can be hard to prosecute as it's difficult to prove. There has been a lot of legislation but enforcing it is a different matter."
