Dental patient Mary Reilly has told how her 6,000 mile quest for cut-price care resulted in a screwdriver being dropped down her throat.
Mrs Reilly (69) from Bracebridge Heath, near Lincoln, travelled to the Vital Centre dental clinic, in Budapest, Hungary, for implants to help improve her dentures.
But on her second trip to the Hungarian capital for a routine check-up, Mrs Reilly ended up being driven to a Budapest hospital in a taxi after a dental screwdriver got lodged in her lungs.
Mrs Reilly paid £2,200 to get the mess sorted out at All Smiles dental practice in Lincoln after she was left dissatisfied by the work carried out during three trips to Hungary.
Mrs Reilly said she decided to travel to Hungary in 2006 after she was quoted a cost of £30,000 to get implants in the UK.
"I was a bit naïve when I went to Hungary and I did not do enough research," she said. "If I did it again I would go to three or four clinics in the UK to get quotes. You need to know what treatment you are having done before you go."
