The unrepentant mayor of an outback town who begged ugly girls to move to his town to snag a man has said some "bloody attractive" girls applied instead.
John Molony, the mayor of Mount Isa attracted a flood of protest in August when he tried to solve a gender imbalance in the small town by suggesting that "happiness awaits" "beauty-disadvantaged women" who moved there.
However, Mr Molony, who refused apologise for his remarks, said he had now been contacted by more than 50 women intrigued by the offer: some of them were "bloody attractive".
"It's getting a bit embarrassing, because some of these girls are beautiful," he said.
"While the media were beating me over the head with a stick, girls were sending me emails from all around the world and a surprising number from across Australia."
"One girl said she'd lived all her life in Brisbane, she's 26, and she's never smelt sweat on a man," he said. "Well, there's plenty (of sweaty men) up here."
