Vladimir Putin has celebrated his birthday by launching a martial arts instruction DVD in which the Russian prime minister shares his love of judo with the world.
Let's Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin was greeted with rapturous acclaim after its premiere in St Petersburg on the eve of the prime minister's birthday.
Mr Putin may have turned 56, but anyone watching the video will have been left in little doubt that this is a man whose virility and nimble dexterity remain so potent that he could lead Russia for years to come without flagging.
The prime minister, who is judo black belt, first gives viewers a history of the martial art before going on to demonstrate a series of throws and holds.
Speaking at the film's premiere on Monday evening, Mr Putin was modest about his role, saying that viewers would gain real insight into the sport from the Japanese and Russian specialists who were his co-presenters.
"The title is an advertising gimmick," he said. "Those people who watch the video will learn not from your humble servant but from real geniuses." Mr Putin's talents appear good enough, however, for President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has asked him for private coaching, the prime minister revealed in August.

Hey guys, every single time I type "arbroath.whatever" I get a link to you blog. Does it actually have anything to do with Arbroath :)?
Anyway I watched the video and read the entry and I noticed one funny thing. Mr Putin owns a black belt but anything he shows in his instructional video is just an entry yellow belt moves. Nicely executed tho. But it doesn't really spikes an interest or trust in his DVD. I never managed to achieve anything above orange belt myself but there is an expert living among us in Condor 45 Royal Navy Marine houses, a olympic Judo team member who can confirm what I say and give us his professional opinion on the DVD. Cheers, Vlad
