Surfing Labrador gains cult status

Three-year-old Harvey can be regularly seen surfing on Tynemouth beach near Newcastle-upon-Tyne with his owners.

Owner Scott Pearson, 43, and his son James discovered Harvey's talent this summer as they were paddling out to sea and Harvey attempted to join in.

After a few attempts, the dog managed to balance on the slippery board and now enjoys squatting on it and riding to shore.

Word of his feats spread and now Harvey rides a sponge board which was donated by a local surfing company, which is more buoyant and therefore easier to use, and he is now a firm favourite with passers-by.

James, 16, who is currently trying out for the British surfing team, said: "It all started when my Dad and I were out paddling on the board and Harvey just swam out to us and we put him on the board. He's the coolest, most exceptional dog I've ever come across.

"He was only about six months old when he started going into the water but he never showed any signs of wanting to jump on a board. He has always loved being in the water and has no fear of the sea," he said. "He's a real natural and now everytime he is out on his board people stop and watch in amazement."
