A schoolboy is being held by police in connection with a hit-and-run ski death at an Italian resort. The 16-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons, walked into a police station accompanied by his parents and a lawyer.
Arthur Lantschner, 51, was hit as he showed his daughter Carolin, 12, how to ski on Christmas Day by the unidentified skier who fled at high speed without even stopping. The tragedy happened at Obereggen near Bolzano in the Italian Dolomites and although a helicopter airlifted Mr Lantschner to hospital he died from massive head injuries.
Police said that his daughter had been left severely shocked by the incident and added that they had been close to arresting the boy after examining ski pass sales and CCTV footage from lifts at the resort.
The boy told police he had not stopped because he had seen others helping the victim and assumed everything was fine, he added the first he knew of the tragedy was two days later when he saw television news. When he realised what had happened the tearful boy, from Reggio Emilia, told his parents and they immediately called their lawyer who made the journey to Obereggen.
Bolzano Paramilitary carabinieri police chief Colonel Andrea Rispoli said the boy was being held on suspicion of manslaughter. Enrico Sassi, the boy's lawyer, said: "He is very upset and distressed by what happened. He had no idea of how serious the accident was and only knew about it two days later.
"As soon as he heard he told his parents and they called me and I drove to meet them and we went to the carabinieri together. He said that he had seen others helping him and that he was not badly hurt."
Many thanks Cervello!
