A patriotic Western Bay family has given the newest addition to their family a name that they hope will set her up for great things. Zealand-New was born at Tauranga Hospital at 11.38am on January 11, and will represent her country wherever she goes.
The Merivale baby, whose full name is Zealand-New Sharron Phyllis Atareta Davoren, was named by her grandmother Sharron Te Moni who said she took over a month to think up the name. "I was fiddling around and it was something different to say it back to front," she said.
Her second choices were Sequoia or Tuscahnee.
Zealand-New's mother Tomicina Davoren, 20, and father Mana Te Moni, 22, said they preferred a name that was different to any that featured in the country's top baby names for 2008.
"I've never heard anybody being called that name. It is unusual to name your child that," Ms Davoren said. "You hear New Zealand every day but not as someone's name."
Zealand-New, who weighed 7lb 5oz, is Ms Davoren's and Mr Te Moni's fourth child. Their other children are named Rlexuz Toara Chantz Te Moni, 4, Mikaere Morgan Te Moni, 2, and Korizma-Lake Vonnita Manaaki Te Moni.
