British woman tried to sneak across US border on frozen Niagara river

According to Border Patrol, Linda Summerfield and Mark Prince, who are engaged, could not get over the Rainbow Bridge Friday afternoon, after Prince, a U.S. citizen living in Canada, was deported back to the U.S. Summerfield, an English citizen, allegedly did not have the proper paperwork to get in, and was denied entry.

"Basically she was not allowed to come in and he had to be back in the U.S, so this was their plan that they hatched in order to reunite with each other," said A.J. Price of the Border Patrol

Summerfield allegedly crossed the Niagara River, and then Prince, already in the U.S., apparently went down to get her. The Niagara Falls Fire Chief says he went down a pipe, but they could not get back up. After a 911 call, rescue workers were on the scene, and it took them about five hours to bring the two out. They went down on ropes and used baskets to bring them to safety. After treatment, Summerfield and Prince were taken into custody. Summerfield now faces illegal entry charges. Prince is charged with conspiracy to illegal entry and aiding and abetting. Both will be in court tommorow.

"People are always willing to tempt fate. We will be prepared next time, as we were this time," said Niagara Falls Fire Chief William MacKay.
