The former Deputy Prime Minister delighted Hull Chinese restaurant manager Jimmy Chu by agreeing to stand by Christine Wei Qin Zhong, 27. Her brother Shan had been supposed to do the honours but was unable to make the journey from China.
So everything was set for the civil ceremony at the Chu China Palace on St Andrew's Quay in Hull, which claims to be the largest Chinese restaurant in the UK.
But just as the couple were making their vows the Hull East MP's mobile telephone went off in his jacket. It continued to ring as Mr Prescott, closing his eyes with embarrassment, reached into his pocket to turn it off in time for the exchange of the rings.
Bridegroom Mr Chu, 27, son of Jack Chu, who started the business, admitted that the phone ringing had given him a jolt since he had already been a bag of nerves. But both he and the bride had seen the funny side and could not help grinning as Mr Prescott struggled to retain his composure.
The MP had saved the day by agreeing to give Christine away. "And despite what happened everyone had a great time," he added.
