Man charged in bizarre kidnapping

A ride turned into a harrowing, three-day ordeal for a 22-year-old Detroit woman who police say was held captive in a Toledo apartment by an acquaintance who handcuffed her, dressed her in a diaper and read Bible passages to her.

When the woman broke free and banged on the door of a nearby apartment for help, the occupant, seeing the woman in a diaper with handcuffs on her wrists and feet, thought it was a joke, police said. Troy Brisport, 34, of Toledo picked up Shykea Boykin about midnight Wednesday in Detroit, after she told him she didn't have a place to stay, police and relatives say.

"He drove her to Toledo," said Minnie Boykin, the woman's grandmother. "She fell asleep in his car, and when she woke up she was in his apartment, handcuffed. Then he put her in a diaper and did all sort of crazy stuff."

Toledo Police Capt. Ray Carroll said Brisport tried to suffocate Shykea Boykin in between reading aloud Bible verses. "She was pretty shaken up after she got away," Carroll said. "She went to one apartment for help, but (the occupant) thought it was a joke. I wish he had called us."

Someone did call police, though, and officers found Boykin in the parking lot, wearing only a T-shirt and diaper. Minnie Boykin said her granddaughter escaped after her abductor fell asleep. "I don't know if he had the key (to the handcuffs) on him or what, but she got away," she said.

Brisport was charged with kidnapping and felonious assault. He was arraigned on Tuesday and is being held on $400,000 bond.
