2 men catch toddler after 40-foot fall

Two men were hailed as heroes Monday after they caught a toddler who fell 40 feet from a third-floor window in Lawrence.

Robert Lemire, 45, of Methuen, said he was talking on his cell phone on Sunday evening near a pizza shop on Haverhill Street when he saw a toddler hanging from a window. "I was trying to dial 911 and not take my eyes off her," Lemire said.

Another Good Samaritan, Alex Day, 23, heard Lemire's calls for help and also ran to the child's aid. "It was like two guys going for a football. We just hoped we didn't drop her," said Lemire.

Day and Lemire first saw toys falling out the window, then the girl's siblings trying to hang on to her. "They couldn't," said Day. "As soon as I got underneath her she was down."

Together, the men caught 18-month-old Caliah Clark before she hit the ground. The child did not suffer any serious injuries, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The girl's mother, Rachel, and father, Randall, thanked the two when they returned home from the hospital. Police Chief John Romero said, "these guys are heroes, no question about it."
