A Frome Community College student has been suspended from lessons after handing out pills, believed to be Viagra, to fellow pupils. Sources close to the school have revealed to the Somerset Standard that the teenage girl brought in the prescription drugs and gave them to fellow students.
Headteacher Wendy Missons refused to confirm any details of the suspension beyond saying that a young girl had been suspended for bringing in prescription drugs.
In a statement Miss Missons said: "All secondary schools in the country have to deal with drugs issues and we are no exception. Our line is firm: any drugs on site, be they legal or illegal, results in exclusion from school."
Dr Geoff Sharp, a GP from the Park Medical Practice, in Shepton Mallet said Viagra or Sildenafil, as it is sometimes known, is not licensed for children under 18.
"If a teenager took one or two of the top dose, it is unlikely to cause harm but could cause a variety of side effects including nausea, indigestion, vomiting, headaches, dizziness and flushing," said Dr Sharp.
"Most of these side effects are temporary and would pass within 12 to 24 hours. The advice to any parent whose son has taken the drug would be that it is unlikely to cause any harm or long-term damage. The best advice I can give is never to take somebody else's prescription medication."
