Two rottweilers who were trying to help their collapsed owner kept police and paramedics at bay for two hours yesterday. Pensioner Ged Mitchell was dead by the time marksmen were called in to shoot the animals.
But it is not known if he had still been alive and could have been saved when the emergency services arrived. Ged had collapsed on a path popular with dog walkers next to a railway line in his home town of Workington, Cumbria.
One of the dogs was shot at the scene and the other ran away but was cornered in a garden, where it was tasered to subdue it by a police officer. It was later destroyed by a vet because of its aggressive behaviour, police said.
A spokesman said: "Police dog handlers and vets were called to the scene but said there was nothing they could do to restrain the dogs."
A neighbour said of the dead man: "He was a retired chap. I was shocked when I heard what had happened to him.
"The dogs were big black and tan rottweilers. I think they were father and son and he got them from a rescue centre. They were real big things, really well-fed and were always very protective of him."
