Police investigate reports baby abandoned after birth on plane

Police in New Zealand are investigating reports that a woman, who gave birth on board an international flight this morning, got off the plane and attempted to abandon the baby.

The Pacific Blue plane had 150 people on board when it took off from the Samoan capital Apia early this morning.

When it landed in Auckland, there was an extra passenger, a newborn baby.

Airport staff cannot confirm if anyone noticed the 30-year-old Samoan woman go into labour.

Police were called when the baby was found on the plane. The mother was quickly located inside the airport terminal.

The mother and baby have been reunited. They are recovering in an Auckland hospital and are believed to be in good health.
