Puppies 'hunted for sport' on dump

Four puppies were born on Scotland's biggest rubbish tip before members of the public started setting their dogs on them for sport.

But now the Japanese Akita cross pups are looking for a new home after they were rescued by local authority workers and the Scottish SPCA.

Greengairs rubbish dump in North Lanarkshire was home to the puppies' mother for two years. Workmen and locals often saw the dog running wild and hunting for food.

But when she gave birth to the two brothers and two sisters, locals set their own dogs on them. When it became apparent that the pups were in danger the council acted quickly to remove them from harm.

In order to rescue the dogs their mother had to be shot with a tranquiliser dart. Sadly, the puppies mother had to be put down because she had been roaming in the wild for two years and staff said she could never be domesticated.

But considering what they have been through, her puppies have recovered well and will soon be ready to be taken in by a family.
