Milkman puts out fire with bottles of lemonade

A milkman put out a caravan fire using bottles of lemonade during his morning round. Danny Brown - who was stopped from joining the fire service because he was too short - saw flames coming from a caravan left at the end of terraced Gonville Road in Bootle, Merseyside, at just before 5am on Friday.

Stopping to investigate, Mr Brown, 35, from Litherland, saw a pile of clothes had been set alight with two gas canisters lying on the top.

The milkman of seven years raced back to his float, grabbed four bottles of lemonade, shook them up and sprayed them over the flames. He then dragged the canisters out into the cool morning air before the fire brigade arrived to make them safe.

Mr Brown, who delivers for Locks Diary, said: "When I saw the gas canisters I just knew I had to put the fire out because I thought if those had gone up, it would've taken the house next door out.

"I phoned 999 from my mobile and just grabbed the biggest bottles from the float and sprayed the lemonade over the fire. It was one of those things that you don't really think about. You just do it. My brother is in the brigade and I know a few others in the job too. I applied a couple of times but was knocked back because I'm not tall enough.

"The lads at the depot thought it was hilarious. They've started calling me the 'Lemonade Fireman'. "You would be surprised what you see when you're out as a milkman early in the morning."
