Rabbit show-jumping is proving a life-saver for twin brothers with an autistic disorder. Matthew and Thomas Haslam, who both suffer from Asperger’s syndrome, have turned their parents’ garden into a full-blown training centre, complete with special jumps and runs for their stable of 35 rabbits.
The two brothers, from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, now hope to claim the title of Britain’s Most Talented Pet at the Ultimate Pet Show next month. Bunny show-jumping began in Sweden as a parody of three-day equestrian eventing. Today there are more than 50 clubs across Scandinavia and the sport is growing in the UK.
For the Haslam family it offers valuable therapy for the 15-year-olds.
Mother Brenda, 46, said: “The boys need a great deal of patience to work with the rabbits. They have to be kind and considerate and care for other creatures. It brings them so much joy.”
