Water to be sold in boxes to make it green

Shoppers around the UK will soon be asking for a box of water. A new “green” company has launched the drink in milk-style cardboard cartons.

Bosses claim the packs — about to hit the UK — have an 80% lower carbon footprint than plastic bottles. They are made from wood from renewable sources and can be recycled after use. Producers Boxed Water Is Better are selling one-litre Tetra Pak cartons in US shops and cafes for £1.20.

The Michigan-based company has pledged to give back 20 per cent of its profits to water and forestry foundations. Spokesman Kevin Hockin said: “Our carbon footprint is dramatically lower as our boxes are shipped flat to our filler and filled only as demand is created.

"Most bottled water companies ship their empty bottles across the globe to be filled, then ship them back.”

But Friends Of The Earth branded the idea “wasteful”. A spokesman said: “Tetra Paks can’t even be recycled here, they get shipped abroad.

“There’s no need for water to be sold in any container. We’re lucky enough to get clean, free water from the tap.”
