Australian council in the poo over YouTube clip

Ratepayers have paid $11,000 for a 21-second YouTube clip showing a woman stepping in dog droppings.

The "pick up after your pooch" campaign video was made by Ultrafilms to encourage residents to clean up after their pets in Port Phillip.

The clip shows a young woman walking on the St Kilda esplanade before stepping in dung and falling over.

In two months the dog clip had been watched just 494 times. That makes it more than $20 per view. The council said it has been happy with the results of other YouTube campaigns it ran.

But Ratepayers Victoria has questioned the value of the campaign in tough economic times. President Jack Davis said $11,000 was a large cost for ratepayers to bear if the campaign was not seen by a wide audience.

He said something had to be done about the "disgusting habit" of leaving dog droppings in the streets, but using neighbourhood watch leaflets or posters in supermarkets may have a bigger impact.
