Couple die after attempt to rescue dogs from river

The body of a 33-year-old man missing in a swollen Ayrshire river has been recovered and his partner has died in hospital, police have confirmed.

Darren Greenan was swept away after he and partner Laura Frey jumped into the River Garnock at about 1400 BST on Sunday, to try to save their pet dogs. Ms Frey, 29, was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock, but died overnight.

They had been walking with their baby daughter when the tragedy happened. One of the dogs drowned while another is still missing.

Darren's cousin, Laurie Miller, 28, said father-of-four Darren was a strong swimmer who would not have considered the water to be dangerous.

He remembered his cousin: "He was a brilliant lad. Everything about him - he was just a good guy. He would have done anything for anyone - especially me. I'm distraught. He jumped in for Laura and this has happened - he's left four kids."

Seven-month-old Ellis was with her parents when the tragedy happened. Six-year-old Rachel, seven-year-old Stephanie, and Leonie, 17 are from previous relationships.
