Inmate broke free after trapping privates in trouser zip

A jailbird escaped after deliberately trapping his privates in his trouser zip so he would be sent to hospital.

Kelly Edney, 29, hatched his eye-watering plan at Dartmoor while serving four years for hoax bomb calls.

After arriving at A& E in Plymouth, he went to the toilet, slipped his handcuffs and climbed out of a window.



He then punched a woman before stealing her car. Edney was later recaptured after a high-speed chase.

Details of the bizarre breakout in 2006 have just emerged following an inquiry by the prison service.

Devonport MP Alison Seabeck condemned the security lapse as "wholly unacceptable".
