Cher's daughter Chastity announces plan to become a man

Chastity Bono, the child of pop singer Cher, is undergoing a sex change to become a man. The 40-year-old, who is known as Chaz, was born a woman and became one of America's most prominent lesbians, but has now begun hormone therapy.

"Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honour his true identity," a spokesman said.

"He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by loved ones.



"It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his coming out did nearly 20 years ago."

Chastity is the only child of Cher and her husband Sonny Bono, who as Sonny & Cher were one of the biggest selling acts of the 1960s and 1970s.

Chastity began the sex-change process earlier this year. It is not clear whether he will undergo surgery as part of the transformation.
