An Irishman who got drunk on a work trip and assaulted a hotel worker has been given a conditional discharge. Michael Hennessy, 30, was seen having a drink-fuelled argument at around 1am while on a work conference and staying in a hotel in Mortimer on March 26 this year.
Employee David Bennett then tried to intervene and asked Hennessy – who has a first class honours degree in management science and works in air traffic control – to return to his room.
David Edwards, prosecuting, told Reading Magistrates’ Court on Friday (May 29): “He was described as being quite aggressive. He picked up a glass and threw it on the floor, saying ‘I’m Irish. Let’s have a fight’.”
Mr Edwards told the court Hennessy shouted abuse at Mr Bennett and added “Have you heard of the IRA?” before head-butting him and threatening his family.
The court heard the incident was out-of-character for Hennessy, who had recently found out his uncle was suffering from a terminal illness when the incident took place and then died the day before the court hearing.
Hennessy, of St John’s Road, Hedge End, Southampton, admitted one count assault by battery. He was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay compensation of £50 and £60 costs.
