Man drowns while mowing his lawn

A Saunders County man died on Thursday night after an accident on a riding lawnmower, authorities reported.

Bob Thorson, chief deputy of the Saunders County Sheriff’s Department, said 85-year-old Albert Kavan Sr. was mowing on his riding lawnmower shortly before 8 p.m. when he got too close to an embankment and the mower rolled to the left.

Thorson said Kavan was thrown from the mower and landed in a small area of water, where he drowned.

Kavan was discovered by his wife Agnes, Thorson said. Along with his wife, Kavan is survived by two daughters and a son.
